If you don't know what "writer's block" is you may have never experienced it. Now if you haven't experienced it, you may be the luckiest person in the world. Seriously.
For all you lucky ones out there that do not know what it is, let me explain. "Writer's block" is a phrase that is used to describe a writer's inability to find the right words or know how to proceed with their work. It basically feels like the image above. I myself have written numerous papers, letters, speeches, stories etc. so of course I have experienced this unfortunate event. However, I've also discovered several ways to combat it. Here they are...
1. Draw Something
Having writer's block feels like you do not have a single original or creative thought at all. So, try drawing a picture - really throw yourself into the sketch. This I always find helps me to get those creative juices flowing again and become interested once more in my paper. Whether the sketch is of a scenery, a tree, a random face, or even a mandala, it could be your way to making your pen glide across your paper once more.
2. Get Moving!
Get out of your room or wherever you're writing, and shake things up a bit. Some people go on runs when they are stressed, this method works for writers too! Walk away from your laptop and get your mind off of your piece. The paper is not going to write itself, especially when you're stuck. Go for a quick workout session, run or a nice stroll, just something to alleviate your stress. The exercise will cause the endorphins in your brain to go wild, and this will help you find the direction that you want your paper to go.
3. Find Inspiration
Just go and do something that makes you happy. If you like poetry reread your favourite poem. Open up your favourite book and read the passages or quotes you like. Re-watch a great movie clip. Watch an episode of TV. Listen to your favourite playlist. Any activity like this might bring you a spark of inspiration and lead you to the proper way that you want to phrase the description of your character, introduction to your essay, or conclusion to your speech. Just go for those good vibes.
4. Channel Your Inner Dory
Sometimes you just have to shoulder up and go through with it. Grin and bear it my friends. Just keep writing, put down whatever you want there and push forward. You can always come back to that section when you have more time or have figured out what you wanted to say. Until then, build the bridge and get over it.
5. Get Rid of Distractions
Change your environment; if you're not being productive where you are think about why. Maybe it's your phone, maybe it's the people around you, or maybe it's the room you're in. I personally have a difficult time writing in classrooms, mainly because of the noise but also because the room always just seems to kill my creative vibes, but when I am at home or basically anywhere else, I can always seem to finish a well-written paper timely. Get up, get out, and get rid of those distractions.
So, there are the five methods I always use to beat my own writer's block, hope that you guys find them useful in your time need. If you have any ways that you find effective feel free to leave them in a comment or send them to me!
